First impressions matter. The exact amount of time it takes to make a first impression is difficult to define: some studies indicate it takes 30 seconds, while others, such as the one done by Princeton psychologists, believe it takes only a tenth of a second! No matter how long you feel it takes, that’s how long you have to convince visitors they are on the right website.

A key part of the first impression is how your information is presented. Some people are happy to read an entire novel before making any decision, others want to see snippets of information, while others are simply looking for a picture or video that will tell them everything they need to know. You need to know how to present your content to cover all of the different learning styles.

Key factors when presenting content

The key to presenting your content and satisfying as many learning styles as possible is to know who you’re targeting. While everyone has their own learning style, identifying your audience may guide you regarding their preferred approach to learning. It’s also essential that you adopt the same approach to every piece of content you post. Failing to be consistent will result in a very hap-hazard website. It will appear disorganised and is likely to turn visitors away.

To summarise, you need to:

  • Know your audience
  • Break up your content
  • Add visual aids
  • Stick to the same writing style and use easy-to-understand language
  • Define your goal

By breaking up content and adding visual aids, you’ll appeal to both those who prefer images and those who prefer to read lots of written content first. Adding a summary, or quick answer, at the top of your page will also help your content appeal to those with limited time or attention spans. Content is generally used to guide visitors into a funnel which ends with a sale and hopefully a loyal client so it’s important when creating your content to know who you’re trying to attract and where you want them to go. If you’re confused about this, they will be too!

Of course, for your content to satisfy all types of visitors, you also need high-quality pieces. Everything you add to your website should be clear and concise and answer the question it sets out to answer fully. This helps to add value to the visitor and will leave them feeling good about you as a business. This helps to build brand awareness and credibility with users and search engines.

Promote your content to get the best results

It’s not just about creating content and adding it to your website. There are several ways in which you can promote content and it’s important to incorporate as many of them as possible for the best results. Some ways to promote content include:

  • Social media
  • Newsletters and e-marketing
  • Backlinks
  • Paid ads

Most of these methods can be used to whet people’s appetite for the content on your website by adding a snippet with a link to read more. Not only does this direct people back to your website, it also means you will have more visitors arriving at your content intentionally, making it more likely that they will actually read it.
