3 top eCommerce marketing trends for the new decade

3 top eCommerce marketing trends for the new decade
Mar 31 2021 SEARCH & MARKETING

According to Statista, 75% of us make at least one online shopping transaction each month. That is a huge pool of people using online technologies and devices to inform their purchasing decisions – and it is an equally big opportunity for marketers.

2020 kicked off in an unprecedented way, but how will the rest of the decade shape the world of eCommerce? And just as important, how will these emerging trends affect the way marketers work?

#1: Fast deliveries and delivery memberships

We have lived in a download culture for more than a decade. We can get a pizza to our door within 30 minutes and can access the latest film through streaming services almost the second it is finished. Ultimately, everything we want we can get quickly and that is driving our expectations within eCommerce too.

Marketers of this decade should be zoning in on this to help increase sales. Most of us are willing to pay a little extra to have next day deliveries, or in some cases, same-day delivery. But one strategy that the best marketers are implementing is fast delivery memberships. These are special annual payments that guarantee shoppers of a particular eCommerce site that they will get fast delivery all year.

They are effective because they offer a promotion to loyal customers and keep them loyal, but they influence other customers to choose them for the whole year when they may have used a competitor instead.

#2: Market for mobiles

You probably thought that every man and his dog owned a smartphone in 2016. So, you may be surprised that an extra billion or more people own one today than they did just four years ago.

This trend has supercharged online shopping with mobile devices and creates a lot of work for web designers who need to make sure webpages work effectively on smaller screens, and that content is optimised for voice searches.

Yet, marketers don’t get away lightly either. We often forget that smartphones send information about the user to a business as well. This generates valuable data that can be used to create targeted marketing campaigns. And it is this aspect of increasing mobile usage that can truly benefit the modern marketing professional.

#3: Personalised experiences

The average internet user will give a website three seconds to load before moving on. Our impatient nature is also evident when we are navigating through a website to find what we need. If we don’t find it within a few clicks or the first search result, we look at competitor sites.

For this reason, it is essential that marketers can collaborate with website designers to make sure every visitor receives the most personalised experience possible. For example, if one of your customers has told you their height and other preferences, you could tailor the homepage to things they might like and be looking for.
