UI/UX design trends to dominate over the next 12 months

Having a strong digital presence is essential for any business in the modern marketplace, but with rapidly changing expectations it can be hard to keep ahead of the competition. Having a website which isn’t just visually appealing but also intuitive and easy to navigate is key for attracting customers - and keeping them.

Here’s a look at five of the top UI/UX trends which are set to dominate in 2021, making them a must-know for any ambitious business.

#1: Engaging microcopy

You might not have heard the term “microcopy”, but you will certainly have experienced it. Microcopies are the tiny pieces of text which are found all over a website. They are brief and quite often prompt an action, such as a search, but they can also acknowledge a completed action, such as adding an item to your basket.

There’s nothing new about the concept of microcopy but, previously, it’s been seen as superfluous to creating an impact. That’s all changed as companies seek to engage more closely with their customers and use every interaction as a means of strengthening their brand.

#2: Eye-catching product photos

Ever seen a photo so improbable that it makes you do a double take? That’s the approach that many leading companies are taking with their product photography - and it’s proving to be a big hit.

Forget about realism, it’s surreal and dazzling images that are taking centre stage. Research has shown that dropping natural photography and incorporating bizarre and strong colours, symbols and backgrounds keeps customers on your website for longer.

By increasing their session time, you should see a corresponding uptick in conversion rates. And all this just for daring to be different with your imagery.

#3: Perfect imperfections

Although everyone may still shop at big-brand supermarkets, there’s a growing appetite to embrace products and companies that are independent and authentic. You can cultivate this type of image with carefully chosen web design elements which are less than perfect.

A free-hand visual hints at uniqueness and an individual approach, a long way from the mass-produced symmetry, which is becoming so undesirable.

Being bold enough to offer a creative design which isn’t pixel-perfect could be just enough to put you head and shoulders above the rest of the artificially smoothed crowd.

#4: Voice UI

Voice user interface is a concept which has already entered into the collective consciousness. Can anyone remember life before Alexa? This trend will continue to rocket, and in some cases could even make the use of keyboards redundant.

Big name brands are already incorporating Voice UI into all of their new designs, and it’s considered a must-have for future development. It can replace complicated graphic user interfaces and can really elevate the overall user experience for your site. If you do nothing else for 2021, voice UI is one to consider.

#5: Dark mode

If you’ve used Apple, Instagram or Google recently, you may have noticed the one thing they all have in common: dark mode.

It’s a contemporary style that fits well with a modern vibe, but it offers many more advantages other than just the obvious aesthetics.

Opting for a dark screen can reduce eyestrain in low light conditions, save battery power and with a strong contrast between colours, make it more accessible for those with impaired sight.

Dark mode is already in the market but it’s a trend that you can easily get on board with as it’s set to continue to soar throughout 2021 and beyond.
