Is SEO worth investing in anymore?

Is SEO worth investing in anymore?
Sep 29 2021 SEARCH & MARKETING

Just after the turn of the century, anyone with a bit of tech know-how could complete an hour’s SEO work, agree some backlinks and then go home. On their commute, they could relax knowing that they had made a real difference for their client.

But during those times, Arsenal were challenging for the Premier League and fewer than one billion people used the internet. Today, the goalposts keep changing, SEO is not so easy to crack and there are more than quadruple the number of internet users that businesses can potentially reach.

Does that mean it is still worth investing in SEO?

The definitive answer is yes – if you are willing to commit.

There is so much evidence available showing that SEO tools are not snake oil, and SEO professionals do get results. You just have to find the latest charts from a reputable SEO department to notice the differences it can make. SEO certainly increases website visitors, increases brand awareness and at the bottom line, increases business revenue.

But the only drawback concerning the SEO game is it has never been so fiercely competitive. To make Google’s elusive first page become a reality, and to make your SEO investment worth it, you need to be prepared to commit to the best and updated SEO services over the long haul - or face dropping off sharply.

SEO must be an ongoing investment

The key takeaway when investing in SEO is that it should be looked upon like a continual investment. You should dedicate a portion of your marketing budget each month to SEO services from a reputable agency with a proven track record in SEO.

The only time that SEO does not become worthwhile is when you only plan on doing a little bit here and there over the course of a year. These one-off projects are not going to help you properly compete with the other businesses who are investing in SEO services regularly.

Remember that SEO keeps changing too!

If the competitive nature of SEO hasn’t already convinced you that it requires an all-or-nothing investment approach, then the speed of SEO changes should. SEO has come a long way from simply adding keywords. Today, Google is more intelligent and far more complex than most people realise.

One new aspect of SEO is catering to the growing trend in voice searching which, believe it or not, changes the way we use language on Google and changes SEO keywords. If you have optimised your pages for text searches and do not plan on investing further for voice searching, expect to see your rankings drop in the near future. This is just one example of many ways that SEO changes - and why your business may need to adapt.
